Mahuya Bhattacharya's Paintings
Born on 21st April 1950, Mahuya Bhattacharya is a painter, and a member of “The
Group’’, an  association of women artists.

Her father Dwijendra Lal Roy was a State Govt Employee and mother Jyotsna Roy
was a school teacher. Her husband Sisir Bhattacharyya was a journalist with
Doordarshan Kendra, the National Television Channel.

She finished her High School education from Banipith Girl's High school in Kolkata
and graduation from the City College. With an MA in journalism from Calcutta
University, her professional career saw her in the field of free-lance journalism in
the audio-visual media, and as an art critic in the print media.

Some of her notable assignments, are :
1.         Youth correspondent at All India Radio
2.          Programmes for ‘Ajker Prosanga’, aimed at viewers of the eastern region
of the country.
3.          Scripted many a documentary films for Doordarshan.
4.          Worked as a compere in many Doordarshan programmes.
5.          Written for a host of journals like ‘Betar jagat’, ‘Paribartan’, “Bartaman’ etc.
6.          Interviewed many national and international personalities for ‘TV Chronicles’,
a journal published from New Delhi.
7.          A telefilm based on her story and script was directed by Satarupa Sanyal
and  telecast on Zee Bangla TV Channel.
And of late, she has even been uploading her poetry recitations on YouTube.

Her childhood passion for painting however never left her, even as she continued to
hone her skills and nurture her understanding of the ‘larger canvas’ of art. In the
process she has been frequently participating in art exhibitions across galleries in
Delhi, Kolkata and Madhya Pradesh, both in solo as well as  group shows.

Deep set philosophies and visions in her mind, pour themselves out on her canvases
in the form of women and different themes of nature, like flowers, fishes, birds,
animals etc.  Her paintings like ‘Offering’, ‘Shelter’, ‘Resting under the tree’ are really
a personification of her inner self ; yes with a strong influence of her background in
journalism.

With the appreciation and publicity that she received over the years from senior
artists as well the press, she has grown in my strength and conviction and pursued
her genre of art with a texture of pointillism, replete with nuances of ‘potoshilpo’,
‘lokoshilpo’ and the ‘kanthashilpo’, the art forms of Bengal. Drawing on the different
elements of nature, the simplicity of each of her paintings is a manifestation of her
personal poetic expressions, giving her work a uniqueness of its own.
